"When one looks at it, everything else seems small. It is so huge that one cannot keep the image of it in mind; it is remembered as smaller, and when one goes back there it seems larger again."
Darby and I were so excited to visit the Colosseum, and just like Goethe says, it is really hard to keep the image of it in mind, you almost forget where you in time and space and nothing feels real when you are standing i front of it, or even inside of it. I will say though that I think the Colosseum looks larger from the outside than it does on the inside, and I think that's because the marble seats have been ripped out, so you're only really seeing the shell of what was inside the arena.
We kept looking at each other and saying "we're just at the Colosseum, no big deal!" But it really was a big deal, we were at the Colosseum. We walked past it numerous times after our initial visit and it's true, every time we passed it it looked bigger and bigger, never really seeming like it stayed the same size.

I'm including this painting I did of the Colosseum as my informal sketch. I painted it before we left for our trip, and I did so because it was one of the things I wanted to see the most. I am including this as being 'informal' because it is a painting I never finished, therefore I am not extremely content with its appearance, and as I am an art major with a concentration in painting, and a preferred painter myself, I figured this would work really well as an informal sketch.
